My Unique Passion for this Project:
This is an easy one: An old movie called Divorce of Lady X has a chemistry between the characters that I love. Also, the meet-cute and identity mix-up are clever and funny.
The film’s crack in the armor: the third act. I thought it was a dud. It had to be totally reinvented.
I also wanted to set it in present-day USA, with contemporary young Americans, and, as I like to do, throw in some screwball comedy and dancing to elevate the fun and romance.
I am not going for Hallmark here. Like all my scripts, I’m aiming for broad commercial appeal with sharp edginess, memorable laugh-out-loud funny scenes, and a Hollywood ending.
I believe cool dancing properly placed in a script adds to the fun and adventure–and often, misadventure. La La Land, Dirty Dancing, and even Arnold gallantly marching through the tango in True Lies helped make these films memorable hits. And yes, I’ve done a bit of exhibition Latin dancing myself, but fortunately, all video evidence of such effort has been destroyed.
The readers of my script have wavered on whether it's more fun to read the script first or watch the original movie. My suggestion: Read the script first to judge on its own merits.
