My Unique Passion for this Project:
As usual in my writing, I start with a real-life truth, then create and carefully structure another fictional world that I believe will make a fun, not overly sentimental, movie.
My friend Norbert inspired One of Those Things.
Aah, Norbert. Crazy, lovable, irascible, funny-as-hell Norbert. Yes, he was real, and he was one of my dearest friends—especially in between my marriages. Norbert and I hung out together. And traveled together. And got kicked out of bars together, from Maine to Key West. He was gay; I am straight, but for a time we were inseparable.
No, unlike the script, I was never a drug dealer, and my girlfriend was not murdered. And to the surprise of many, I didn’t even murder my ex-wife. But some of the most unlikely scenes are remarkably true.
When I was singing the blues from my failed marriage, Norbert brought life back to me, just as his character in the script rescues pathetic Freddie.
Sadly, Norbert died some years ago, way before his time. Sure, from excessive drinking, but really just wanting to be loved too much by those around him. He didn’t realize how much so many of us already did.
Then there’s the music. Cole Porter, Sondheim, Rodgers and Hart, Jerry Hermann. We loved hanging out in piano bars and singing along to the old standards. And, yes, I mean old. I listen to and like today’s pop music, including Harry Styles and Bruno Mars, and I even confess my guilty pleasure: Sabrina Carpenter. But the music from the 30s and 40s is part of my soul. That’s probably why I play it every day on my own piano.
All the songs used in the script, except for the opening Elvis song, were written by gay composers. Norbert would’ve wanted it that way.
